DCU Saints 0 – 58 UL Vikings
March 19th, 2006 | | Game Reports
DCU entered their first ever game on Sunday to face the UL Vikings. The Saints’ inexperience showed early and the Vikings experience was evident in the first half as they
scored 38 unanswered points. They put heavy pressure on a rookie offense and QB Conor Buggle found it difficult to get the offense rolling. Despite some good runs on the
ground by Dave McMahon and Cillian Hurley, the Saints’ offense never got rolling and as a result the defense was under heavy pressure in bad field position for the entire
first half.

For the second half, the Saints gritted their teeth and although unable to score, gave spectators an inkling of things to come for DCU football. WR Willie Coyne made some
outstanding catches as QB Buggle started to get comfortable. An amazing 50-yard scramble by Buggle was called back for an illegal block during the play but was the highlight
of the offense’s day.
In the second half the defense stepped up a gear and pounded the Vikings offense. CB Darren Wilson completely shut down Vikings WR Chris Bassitt for the half. CB Conor
Spencer made some great tackles and S Shane Buckley made a vicious tackle on Vikings American QB Jeremiah Sexton, aswell as defending a pass into the End Zone stopping
a 2-point conversion attempt by QB Sexton. Saints MLB and captain Brett Figliozzi recovered a fumble and made some good tackles as did fellow MLB Carl Rushe.
By the fourth quarter, although the game was out of the Saints reach, the momentum was all DCU’s. Adjustments to the defense completely stopped any offense by the Vikings
and depsite losing their first game badly, confidence was high coming off the field.
